Meet the team


Ian Anderson


Ian was born in Dunedin and educated at Kaikorai Valley High School. He started his painting apprenticeship with Knox & Anderson in 1974 and qualified as a Painter & Decorator 1978. Ian and Sandra brought the business from Ian’s Father, Drewe Anderson, in 1993 and have been running a successful business to the present day. Ian is a proud Green Island man. He has played and coached rugby for the Grizzlies, been club captain, and spent several years on the committee. Knox & Anderson believe in giving back to the community and have sponsored the club for several years. Ian has also given back to the industry by being on the board for the Master Painters Otago for many years and served two terms as President. Ian is an avid cyclist and cycles over 200km per week. He has enjoyed many trips away with the Starfish Riding Group. Ian’s is a big Highlanders fan and season ticket holder; however, he enjoys all sport.

Andy Campbell


Andy was born in Dunedin and educated at King’s High School. He is passionate about this city and delivering a quality service. Andy has been in the painting industry for over 30 years, and has had several roles within major global paint manufacturers in both New Zealand and the UK.  The most recent was with Sherwin Williams as their National Commercial & Granosite Manager. Andy became a partner in the business in April 2018 and is enjoying being part of the Knox & Anderson Team. Andy has a strong community focus. He has been Chairman on the Board of Trustees at Tainui School, a member of the Sports Council at Otago Girls High School, and has coached volleyball at Kings High School for over 25 years. Committed to the construction industry and apprentices for over 10 years, Andy has been a member of two National Advisory Boards for the BCITO (the Building & Construction Industry Training Organisation), Painting & Decorating and Exterior Plastering. He is passionate about upskilling the industry to deliver the best possible results. A big Highlanders and Crystal Palace fan, Andy is passionate about all sport. Having played rep level  Football and Volleyball, he now spends his time on the side lines supporting his three children.

Brent Sinclair

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Brent was born in Dunedin and is another fine product to come out of Kings High School. Brent started his apprenticeship with Aburns in 1978. Having completed his Painting & Decorating qualification in 1982, he worked for the Post Office and then ran his own painting business before joining the Knox & Anderson Team in 1994. Restoring some of Dunedin’s old buildings is Brent’s preference, as he loves the challenge this work brings. Brent is a big Highlanders & All Blacks fan and a keen sportsman and having played Rugby and Cricket he concedes that Indoor Bowls is his passion. He has represented Otago and won 14 Centre Titles. Brent has also given back to his sport, where he has been the secretary for his Green Island Club for the last 15 years and is a current Otago Selector/Convenor.

Craig (Red) Anderson

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Red was born in Dunedin and Educated at Kaikorai Valley High School. Straight out of school, Red started his painting apprenticeship with Henderson's in 1981. He completed his Painting & Decorating Qualification in 1985. Red joined the Knox & Anderson Team in 1994 and enjoys the diversity of the work, where no two jobs are the same. He especially enjoys the repaint work, hanging imported wallpapers and he loves meeting the different clients. Red loves all sport but his passion is rugby, in particular The Green Island Grizzlies, where he has played, managed, been a committee member and is currently the president. He is also the rugby expert on Saturday Afternoons for Radio Sport. Red plays golf most Sundays and he is also a big Liverpool fan.

Tony Shaw

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Tony was born in Farnborough in the UK and moved with his family to Auckland at the age of 15. Tony completed his apprenticeship in 1978. He then saw the light and moved to Dunedin, where he has painting for over 40 years. Tony loves the heritage houses in our fine city and gets great pleasure from restoring the old villas to their former glory. A father of three lovely children, Tony has always been hugely supportive and likes nothing better than supporting their endeavours from the side lines.

Daniel French

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Dan was born in Dunedin and Educated at Logan Park High School. Dan has had a few different jobs since leaving school, including building and working at the Freezing works before joining the Knox & Anderson Team in 2004. He completed his Painting Qualification in 2008. Dan loves the diverse work we do but especially enjoys painting the new houses and seeing the look on the clients’ faces when they see the finished article. Dan is an accomplished sportsman, keen on rugby and golf, He is also a South Island and Otago Rep with Indoor Bowls. In 2017 he represented New Zealand in the test series against Australia. Being a big sports fan, his favourite teams are the Highlanders and Atlanta Falcons

James (Jimmy) Bennett 

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Jimmy is a proud Otago man and was born and educated in Dunedin. Jimmy has had a few different jobs since leaving school, including carpentry and forestry, before joining the Knox & Anderson Team in 1999. He completed his Painting Qualification in 2003. Jimmy loves the diverse work we do and is just as happy on the end of a spray unit as he is painting a new house, or on the end of a scraper preparing an old villa. Outside work Jimmy supports the Highlanders, is involved with the Mosgiel Motorcycle Club and enjoys golf and fly fishing. He boasts that he has caught several 10-pound trout in Lake Mahinerangi

Bradley Torrance

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Bradley was born in Dunedin and educated at Kings High School. Since leaving school, Bradley has had several jobs in the food industry, including being a kitchen hand, but the lure of an apprenticeship convinced him that Painting & Decorating was his future. Bradley started with Knox & Anderson in 2013 as an apprentice and qualified in 2016. He loves the diverse range of work we do, especially the detail work. Bradley has a wide range of activities that he’s involved in outside work, including playing bowls for Forbury Park, tramping, camping and kayaking. His main passion, however, is motorbikes and he boasts his top speed on the track is 310km.

Evan Harvey

Qualified Painter & Decorator

Evan was born and educated in Lawrence and followed in his father Seddon's footsteps in becoming a painter & decorator. Moving to Dunedin Evan completed his apprenticeship with Knox & Anderson Ltd in 1984. Over the years Evan has worked for Stephen Russell Painters & Phoenix Services as well as working for himself for over 15 years, before returning to Knox & Anderson Ltd in 2018. Evan has been happily married for 33 years and enjoys playing golf and has a paasion for fishing, with his favourite spot being Worsley, where he has caught several large fish over the years. Evan loves the variety of work we do, but takes massive pride in renovating old villas and buildings to their former glory.

Sam Thomson


Sam was born and bred in Dunedin and is a proud Kings High School Old Boy. After spending time with the NZ Army doing basic training, Sam realised a career in the Defence Force was not for him, and he joined the Knox & Anderson Team in 2017. Sam is currently one year into his Painting Apprenticeship and is loving the diverse skills he is learning under the guidance of his experienced work mates. Sam is an accomplished sportsman, playing basketball and Premier Division rugby for Green Island. He has also given back to the sport by coaching the Alhambra Union Colts team in 2018. Sam’s favourite sports teams are the Highlanders and Boston Celtics,

Penny Kirtley

Brush Hand

Penny was born in Driffield, Yorkshire in England, and over the years has had diverse work around the world, from secretarial roles, teaching in the UK, lecturing university journalism students in Sydney to renovating properties.

Penny is the newest member of our Knox and Anderson team, starting in September 2018, after completing the NZ Certificate in Construction Trade Skills - Painting & Decorating at Ara Institute of Canterbury, Penny would like to do her apprenticeship and continue her passion of renovating and restoring old buildings to their former glory.

Outside work Penny loves to walk her dogs, she also enjoys tramping, swimming and is the self-proclaimed "up-cycler extraordinaire".
